Challenges: touch [info]snape100, good omens [info]lupin100
Word Count: 100
Note: this is the beginning of the conclusion to the de-aged Snape plot begun a couple of weeks ago. He is a teenager physically but has found the key to reclaiming his memories and his old body….

Severus was taller now, clearly older - early 20s, perhaps? Remus backed up against the garden wall, shaking his head as Severus pressed closer and closer. They were close enough that her son-in-law had to tilt his head back to meet those dark, intent eyes. He looked so torn.

A white dove fluttered into the yard, its snowy wingtips brushing past Severus' hair. Andromeda's eyes widened at the good omen. She'd known all along that her daughter's marriage was doomed, but a dove meant good luck in love.

Remus pulled Severus down into a kiss that made her gasp.

music for the day [Nov. 11th, 2009|01:36 pm]

Thanks to all who have served so that I don't have to. Here, have some thematically relevant music. All on my website, so right-click save, or use DownThemAll.

Over the Hills and Far Away - John Tams. This is the theme music for the Sharpe series.
The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - Clam Chowder. Classic Australian WWI song by Eric Bogle.
No Man's Land - Eric Bogle. Another classic WWI song by Eric Bogle.
Roads to Moscow - Al Stewart. Song about the Wehrmacht invasion of the Soviet Union in WWII. The (excellent) album this is on, Past, Present, and Future, is a Yuletide fandom this year! \o/
Gulf War Song - Moxy Fruvous. Bringing it up toward the present...
Men in a War - Suzanne Vega. Oddly the last two (very different) books I have read have mentioned the phantom limb phenomenon.
Where Have All the Flowers Gone? - Peter, Paul, and Mary. I always though this was a Vietnam protest song, but Wikipedia tells me it comes from much older roots.

In more thematically relevant news, we finished watching Generation Kill. I enjoyed it, although I don't think I am particularly fannish about it. On the other hand, I'm about to listen to the audiobook of Nate Fick's One Bullet Away.

Some nifty links from around the internets:

♥ The literal video version of Total Eclipse of the Heart is still my favorite, but this one also made me laugh out loud. Plus, I love the Bare Naked Ladies:

♥ via [info - personal] mtl, 10 Geeky Laws That Should Exist, But Don’t

♥ via [info]catwalksalone, a nifty animation (move the slider bar) showing relative scale of cells and things. It reminded me (and others!) of the wonderful movie Power of 10 which I first saw in high school, and OMG now it is (I should not be surprised) on YouTube!

Baby chick does Paul Gross arms!

In other random news, I have decided what is good enough for [info - personal] norah is good enough for me, and I have switched my default icon to the santa-hatted version in honor of having signed up for Yuletide. I am also bouncing in my seat waiting for [info]festivids sign-up to begin, which I am ridiculously excited about. I am writing (a long overdue story that I am too embarrassed to talk about anywhere but at [info]wrisomifu), beta-reading (ooh, I forgot how much I like due South! \o/), and I am running a marathon on Saturday. I'm also uploading some topical music that I'll make a new post for later today.

What's new with you?

Rant time [Nov. 11th, 2009|07:23 pm]

painless_j
Numbered post.

1. pj: When I see something like this in KKM fic headers, it always makes me WTF: "Pairing: Both of Yuuram & Wolfyuu".
pj: As if they were different pairings. Honestly.
[info]lyssaphra: I'm guessing it stands for uke/seme dynamics. Common in lots of anime fandom.
pj: Yes, clearly does but honestly, it's not like it's carved in stone. Especially if you intend them to switch.
[info]lyssaphra: But some people only read one variation and are seriously squicked by the other. Really common. Like, I refuse to read Duo x Heero, but can read Heero x Duo without problems.
[info]lyssaphra: For me, it has less to do with the sex thing and more to do that depending on the seme/uke dynamics, the characters are written differently out of sex.
pj: Yes, I've seen some like this but still Wolfyuu and Yuuram look stupid. Say "Wolfram and Yuuri; they switch roles" or something.
[info]lyssaphra: I'm sure the Japanese has better short forms. Western fangirls tend to have no clue how to form them really.
pj: "That depending on the seme/uke dynamics, the characters are written differently out of sex" -- this annoys me too. I mean, a character is the same character regardless of whether he likes it up his arse or buggering somebody else. Really. They stay the same person.
[info]lyssaphra: Hey, I'm not protesting. I think it's stupid that Heero is written like a weepy weepy thing in Duo x Heero fic while Duo and Heero both get written strong in Heero x Duo fic.
pj: lol

2. Nobody is writing Scar slash still. Or even Scar het. WTF people?

3. I'm watching a Naruto fandom newsletter but still not reading or even clicking any fics from there. WTF self? Illogical much?

4. Should write reviews of Loveless, Ouran, Kuroshitsuji, and a dozen yaoi manga. Self, quit procrastinating.

HP recs: 2 H/D and one Sirius/Draco [Nov. 11th, 2009|05:07 pm]

painless_j
[Tags|, , ]

Light as Iron, Singed as Pearl, by Snegurochka_Lee #
Harry/Draco, NC-17, ~14K words. Summary: The owner of the elite BDSM club M had not gained his reputation as the most coveted Dominant on the scene by taking on just any riff-raff submissive who asked. It would take an unexpected letter to convince him to accept a new client, but it might turn out to be the biggest mistake he ever made. Warnings: BDSM. EWE.

Look, BDSM isn't my kink. S/M part of it is closer to my squick even but I admit I find D/s dynamics interesting, and trust Snegurochka to write D/s in a way that would keep me on tenterhooks all the way and get so intrigued as to feel it almost as if it were my kink. It's awfully, scorchingly hot and the pairing and power dynamics is to die for! Snegurochka, please be writing more H/D!

Black Coffee on a Lonely Night, by Femmequixotic #
Hary/Draco, past Draco/Astoria, NC-17, ~21,600 words. Summary: Draco owns a café in the city. Harry's an MP who comes in every morning, newspapers in one hand, BlackBerry in the other, and orders a triple espresso macchiato. Warnings: non-magical AU.

The fic is utterly charming! I don't think this Harry or Draco have much to do with their canon counterparts but I do advice you to give it a try because the story is absolutely magical, as only some of non-magical AUs happen to be sometimes. Lovely and delightful and written really wonderfully! I'll be rereading it when I want to feel good -- not because of fluff (there isn't any... or much; there's quite a bit of angst actually) but because of the sheer comfort and, again, charm of it.

Stay, by gypsyflame #
Sirius/Draco, NC-17, ~23K words, AU. Summary: War is coming, and Narcissa is scared for Draco. So she turns to the only person she can think of – Sirius Black. Warnings: Dubious consent; may be considered underage (Draco is 16).

My favourite rare pairing has got a new longish fic! The very fact is wonderful but the fic is wonderful in its own right too. It's hot and in character and plotty; it's a forced marriage fic with all the angst and tension the plot asks for. Draco is wonderfully helpless but still a scheming bastard, not without humanity or feelings though. Sirius who is forced into the position of a responsible adult is wonderfully torn between responsibility and his less admirable character traits. Harry -- we can't bypass Harry in a fic set post OotP, right? -- is also very Harry. But what I loved best about this story is that among the currently more trendy post-Hogwarts fics, this one reads as if it were written a few years back, only with the full canon knowledge making it seamlessly written into canon, not jossed.

Let Dai rec: Feels Like Fading Away [Nov. 11th, 2009|04:25 pm]

Feels Like Fading Away, by allira_dream []
Dai/Jaehee, PG, under 1K words. Warnings: Spoilers for the end of the manwha. Summary: If this was a movie, Dai would have been just there, across the street, not looking at him, perhaps listening to some music, perhaps looking at the TV's. A/N: Written for springkink: Let Dai, Dai/Jaehee: reunited - we aren't Romeo and Juliet.

I didn't want any fic after reading Let Dai. But now that several months have passed, I do. I want a long well-written fic set post series with lots of angst, drama, love, and a happy(ish) or hopeful ending. I haven't seen any. So I'll take a very short one. Say, this. There's one problem with this fic: needs editing for a few times where character names are confused (but Dai and Jaehee being one, in essence, it's understandable :D). Otherwise, it's written well, with the right balance of poetic, angsty, and charming, and reads very pleasantly. Do try it!

“You’re not an adult,” Remus breathed. His hands shook as he placed them over Severus’ fingers. “According to the Ministry, your grandmother – “

“The spell was supposed to be temporary.” Severus pressed close enough that their bodies touched. “You found the key to restoring my adult self: exposing me to my old life as much as possible. We were lovers, I know it, you – “

“I married Dora when I thought you were a traitor. I have a son.” Remus tried to pull Severus’ hands away. “Severus, we can’t – “

“We can’t not. Not if I’m to be myself again.”

Apparently saying "Meep" is disruptive. [Nov. 10th, 2009|11:49 am]

florahart
WTF. Summary: students were saying "Meep" too much, so school administrators banned the word and threatened suspensions. Okay, seriously? I am so not a troublemaker, and I would be seriously inclined to simply invent and promulgate a new non-word for whatever disruptive purpose, were I met with this. For instance, "Merble."
